According to the latest data released by the American Bar Association (ABA), in 2021, for the sixth year in a row, women will outnumber men in US law school classrooms.
Because we believe responsible women in the legal profession are important, we have spent 6 years reviewing ethics documents for law schools.
With that in mind, we’ll take a closer look at the gender makeup of law schools in 2021 and how the demographics have changed since we started tracking the data.
We’ll also highlight some of the amazing women entering law school in 2021 and find out what they have to say about being a lawyer.
In 2016, the number of women enrolled in the Juris Doctor program exceeded 50% for the first time. Then in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, female students continue to outnumber male students.
In 2021, women will once again outnumber men in law school classrooms. Women make up 55.29 percent of all students at ABA-approved law schools.

Women in particular are making significant progress at top law schools. Surprisingly, 17 of the top 20 law schools in 2021 have more female applicants than male applicants. Every law school in the top 20 has at least 47.56% women.

What If Your Law School Loses Its Accreditation?
From 2020 to 2021, the percentage of women attending ABA-accredited law schools increased by 1.2%. Most law universities in the country (82.91%) have more women than men (73.98% in 2020).
In 2021, Northeastern University surpassed North Carolina Central University School of Law as the top law school for women in terms of female enrollment (71.99%). North Carolina Central University School of Law ranked 3rd, but women still made up 69.35% of participants.
